ELGIN – Roy Larry Branham, 31, drowned Saturday in a boating accident.
Mr. Branham’s body was recovered from the Wateree River Sunday following searching and dragging operations.
Mr. Branham and a companion, William Bradford, also of Elgin, were thrown from the boat in which they were riding after striking a log or stump near Devil’s Elbow, Fire Chief Carl Hammond of the Camden-Kershaw County Rescue Squad said. Bradford said he attempted to rescue Mr. Branham but was pulled under. After breaking loose, he swam to shore.
Mr. Branham was born in Elgin, son of Willie H. Branham and Pearl Wages Branham. He was a self-employed painter.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Rose Renault Branham of Salem, Mass; two daughters, Misses Veronica Branham and Sabrina Branham of Salem; his parents; two brothers, Alvin Branham and Willard Branham of Elgin; and three sisters, Mrs. Ray Barrett, and Mrs. Russell Branham of Elgin and Mrs. Alonzo J. Cox, of Selma, Ala.
Plans will be announced by Kornegay Funeral Home of Camden.
