ELGIN – In Saturday night’s action at Blaney Drag Strip, Charles Therwanger of Dallas, Tex. drove the Mike Burkhart Camaro to victory in the feature Funny Car competition.
Therwanger clocked a 7.07 seconds elapsed time at 203 m.p.h. “Pee Wee” wallace of Richmond, Va. was second in the “Virginian” Barracuda with a 7.28 e.t. and 205.94 m.p.h.
Pro-Stock winner was Roy Hill of High Point, N. C. at the wheel of his ’69 Barracuda. Hill turned at 10.10 e.t. at 138 m.p.h. Second place winner was Roy Alford of Lexington in a ’70 Dodge.
Super Stock competition saw Chuck Neely of Columbia take first place in a ’70 Dodge.

Ned Cherry of Charlotte, N. C. captured Modified Eliminator in a D-gas ’55 Chevy. This was the first time in the winner’s circle for Cherry this year at Blaney; he came close earlier this year when he took second place. Jimmy Thompson of Great Falls came in second, driving a D-modified ’68 Camaro.
Big Stock Eliminator was grabbed by a gear-shifting “Powder Puff”. Jean Howard of Polkton, N. C. took first place at the wheel of an F-stock ’69 Camaro. Miss Howard has won several meets in the Carolinas recently. Second place went to Noah Francis of Cayce in a C-stock ’68 Plymouth.
In Little Stock competition, Wayne Hayes of Columbia took first in a T-stock ’55 Chevy, and Theron Smith of Gilbert won second in a ’57 Chevy.
