Mary Lorick Thompson of Spartanburg, South Carolina | 1921 – 2021 | Obituary

Mary Milling Lorick Thompson went home to be with her Lord on Monday, December 6, 2021, three weeks before her 100th birthday.  She was born December 27, 1921, in Kershaw County, South Carolina to Charles Pinckney Lorick and Martha Sill Lorick.  Her mother died when she was very young and she was raised by her father and her beloved aunt, Mamie Sill Hamilton.  Upon graduation from Chester High School, she attended and graduated from Winthrop College and taught high school English for several years.  Her childhood sweetheart, Bill Thompson, returned from service in Europe during World War II, and they were married on January 1, 1946.

They lived in several places for Bill’s continued schooling while Mary taught school.  They finally settled in Savannah, GA, for Bill’s work and Mary stayed at home with her two little girls.  However, she always found time to be active in the church.  Mary and Bill were long time members of First Presbyterian Savannah, GA, where they were both Elders.  Mary was the first woman elder elected in her church.  Mary sang in the choir at the church and often sang solos and duets for special events.

They moved to Spartanburg, SC, in 1997, to be near their children and grandchildren, and enjoyed living in their little house just a few blocks down the street.  Mary and Bill became very involved in First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC, sitting on the front row every Sunday for many years.  They delivered Mobile Meals, helped build Habitat for Humanity houses, enjoyed Bill’s Book Club immensely, especially the trips, and visited the sick and elderly.  She was a Circle Bible leader for many years. Mary and Bill did everything together, having a wonderful marriage that lasted over 70 years.

Mary’s joyful outlook on life was contagious to all.  Her smiles could light up a room.  All who knew her were encompassed in her love and felt enriched by it.  She made family of strangers, and friends into family. Mary never met a stranger and was happy to talk to anyone.  She was so happy at Eden Terrace, her last home.  Her family wants to thank the whole staff for making her seven years so enjoyable.  Special thanks to Theretha Presley, fondly known as the “the General”, for her kindness, care, and encouragement.

Along with her parents, Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill, and her brothers, Charles Lorick and Edward Lorick.  Surviving her are her two beloved daughters, Mary Lorick Thompson of Spartanburg, SC, and Martha Thompson Bean and her husband, Budge who she loved like a true son, also of Spartanburg, SC.  Also surviving her are her four precious grandchildren, Howard Carlisle Bean, III of Spartanburg, SC; William Kilgore Thompson Bean and wife, Jayme, of Winter Garden, FL; Mary Caroline Bean-Wade and her wife, Jen, of Greenville, SC; and Martha Elizabeth Evert Bean and husband, Austin Ward, of Orlando, FL. She is also survived by her two great-grandsons.  Wesley Bean, her younger great-grandson, she loved from the moment he was born and enjoyed all the photos of him shared by the family.  Hudson Green, her older great-grandson, brought her much joy through his visits and Facetime. Hudson loved to show her how to play with his toys.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 4:00 PM at Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church in Liberty Hill, SC, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Her memorial service will be held in Spartanburg, SC, on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 4:00 PM, with visitation following in the Perrin Room.  Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
