LUGOFF, SC Woodie Lynn Smith, 85, passed away on January 30, 2021. He was born to Adelle Smith and Woodrow Wilson Smith on April 5, 1935, in Duplin County, North Carolina.
At the age of 6, Woodie and his 2 younger brothers entered Barium Springs Orphanage – A Home for Children located in Statesville, NC. This became Woodie’s new home until he graduated high school in 1955. Woodie loved his “Barium family” and often spoke fondly about the happy years he spent there.
After graduation, Woodie put his gifted mechanical mind to work. He obtained a highly sought-after position with NCR, in Miami, Florida, repairing cash registers. He spent the rest of his career as a highly respected field engineer and years later, when he left NCR, he became a founding business partner at Sentry Cash Register in Danville, Virginia.
Woodie exhibited his mechanical talents, even as a child. He enjoyed building things, and often would take things apart “just to see what made them tick.” He loved anything to do with nature, and especially enjoyed fishing, hunting and birdwatching. His other favorite hobbies included vegetable gardening and woodworking, and he excelled at both! Woodie loved the Lord, his cherished family, and spending time with dear friends. He also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling or laughing at a good joke or story.
In addition to his parents, Woodie was preceded in death by his first wife, “Trevi”, his brother, Frankie, and his sister, Peggy Sue.
Woodie is survived by his wife of almost 25 years, Barbara McCall Brooks, his brother, Boyce Dean, his son, Woodie Lynn Smith, Jr (Linda), his daughter, Lori Fuller, his 3 step-daughters, Robin Brooks, Cathy B McCarthy and Sharon Brooks: 5 grandchildren, Rachel Reith (Eric), Rebecca Lamport (Brendan), Haley, Madisen & Morgen Fuller: 4 step-grandchildren, Michael Chnupa, Candice Dempsey, Brandon Luke and Patrick McCarthy: 7 great-grandchildren, Bradley, Eden & Evie Reith, Brooks & Noah Lamport, Anderson & Saylor Leaphart: 3 step-great-grandchildren, Jarret and Jake Dempsey and Tristan Chnupa.
