Rosa Lee Smith was born November 17, 1939, to the late Leroy Reeves and Willemae Morris, in Chesterfield County, South Carolna. She received her education in the public schools of Kershaw County. As a young woman, Rosa Lee utilized her sewing skills in support of the historic Capolong Sewing Factory in McBee, SC; where she worked for five years. Subsequently, Rosa Lee served as a custodian for Rollins Services for over 15 years; a job prevalent to the history of the African American women of the 1960s.
Rosa Lee was a devoted Christian, and a faithful member of Red Hill Baptist Church for over 40+ years. As a prominent member of the congregation, she served as the pastor’s aide, a representative on the usher board, and the kitchen committee.
