Maenell Johnson Newman

Maenell Johnson Newman of Camden, SC, went home to be with the Lord on March 26, 2020. Born on May 14, 1922, in Mayesville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Murray Hudson Johnson and Nellie Mae Graham Johnson.

She retired from Hermitage Cotton Mill in 1983. She loved her family and enjoyed hosting every holiday in her home. Her favorite hobby was gardening and afternoon visits on the front porch swing. No one could leave her house without something fresh from her garden. She was Grandma to so many more than just her family.

Maenell is survived by her three sons, Jimmy Newman (Louise), Eddie Newman, and Billy Newman; and 8 grandchildren, Ronnie Newman (Donna), Connie Newman, Billy Newman, Jr. (Anne Marie), Teresa Miller (Jim), Robin Threatt (Terry), Pam Company (Chip), Michelle Williams (Trey), and Heather Newman. She is also survived by 23 great-grand-kids; 19 great-great grand-kids; and siblings, Hebron Johnson (Kitty), Joyce Foxworth, and Calbert Johnson.

Maenell was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Ernest Edward Newman; grandson, Anthony Edward Newman; great-grandson, James Kyle Newman; and siblings, Roselee Caulder, Welburn Johnson, and Cecil Johnson.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of the Karesh Wing for their excellent care and compassionate support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may made to Hermitage Baptist Church at 814 Jefferson Davis Highway, or A. Sam Karesh at Kershaw Health Medical Center, 1315 Roberts Street, Camden, SC.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Maenell Johnson Newman will be announced at a later date.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
