Ed L. Smith, Jr., 83, of Columbia passed away Friday, June 8, 2018.

Ed graduated from Dentsville High School in 1953 and attended the University of South Carolina. Ed was self-employed and retired from road construction and real estate development. He turned his hobby, drag racing, into a business and built Blaney Drag Strip in 1962, bringing NHRA championship racing to South Carolina. Ed loved traveling and spending time on his boat at the coast. He was a faithful member of Spring Valley Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandra Boykin of Camden; daughter and son-in-law Sharon (Dan) Roach of Columbia; son and daughter-in-law David (Karen) Smith of Columbia; and four grandchildren, Virginia Roach of Columbia, Catherine Roach of New Orleans, Sarah Smith of Charleston, and Daniel Smith of Columbia.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, George Alexander Smith and Billy Nathan Smith.

Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Spring Valley Baptist Church, 91 Polo Road, Columbia. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, June 11 at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Extension, Columbia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Spring Valley Baptist Church, 91 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223; or to Inside Out of South Carolina, Inc., a local ministry for multi-housing communities, P.O. Box 290308, Columbia, SC 29229; or to Gideons International, P.O. Box 97251, Washington, DC 20090.
