Funeral service for Luther Edward Evans, 81, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2016, at Chapin United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 42 years. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Born on November 3, 1934 in Camden, SC, a son of Horace Franklin and Miriam Hill Evans, Ed grew up in Bennettsville, SC, graduating from Bennettsville High School in 1953. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Jackson and, subsequently, in Korea. After his military service, he attended the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1962. While in school he began his career with the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. He held many positions and served on numerous national committees. Ed retired as the Deputy Executive Director in 1993. At that time, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Carroll Campbell. In 1960, Ed met the love of his life, Yvonne Quick. They were married two years later and were blessed with two daughters. The family moved from Columbia to Chapin in 1974 and built their home on Lake Murray. Ed loved fishing, boating and sitting on the deck enjoying his “backyard”, as he called the lake. Ed dearly loved his children and grandchildren, and bragged on them to everyone he met. He was so proud of them. He and Yvonne were fortunate to be able to travel extensively at home and abroad and had a full life together. He will be greatly missed.
