ELGIN – Funeral services to honor the life of US Army Sgt. 1st Class Jerold Thomas Newton, Sr. Ret., 72, of Elgin will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Blaney Baptist Church, with visitation at the church from 1:00–3:00 p.m., prior to the service. Rev. Jacob Helsley and Rev. Philip Blankenship will officiate. Burial with full Military Honors will be held at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery on Monday, January 25 at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made in Mr. Newton’s memory to Blaney Baptist Church, 1400 Blaney Road, Elgin, SC 29045.
Mr. Newton, husband of Ruth Corbin Newton, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016. He was the son of the late R.L. Newton and Sue Garner Newton, and was born in Calhoun Falls, SC. Also, he was retired from US Postal Service. Mr. Newton was a member of Blaney Baptist Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Karen McInerney of Elgin and Patty Morrison (Eddie) of Lyman, SC; sons, Jerold T. (J.J.) Newton, Jr. (Susie) and Randy Newton both of Elgin; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ellen Bowman, Mary Bowman, Katie Hampton and Susie Rogers; brothers, Roy Newton (Carrie Mae) and Fred Newton (Lorena); a brother-in-law, Thomas Corbin.
He was predeceased by a sister, Bobbie Lister.
