Donald Afon “Strick” Strickland

Donald Afon “Strick” Strickland, 83, of Blythewood went home to be with the Lord on July 5, 2015. Born in Blaney, SC on July 21, 1931, he was the son of the late Carl and Bertha Strickland. He completed the Dale Carnegie School of Sales in 1962, after which he was awarded the Distinguished Sales Award in January of 1968. Afon moved to Columbia 55 years ago and retired from Bagnel Builders as a construction salesman. He is a member of Spring Valley Baptist Church where he served on the Building Committee, and was also active in other church positions. He was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.

His favorite pastime was playing church league softball where he was the pitcher for Jackson Creek Baptist Church for many years and once pitched a no hitter. His other great passion was gardening.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Evangeline “Van” Strickland; daughters, Yvonne Zweimiller of Blythewood and Marie (Tom) Boring of Greenville; grandchildren, Amanda (Joey) Scruggs, Stephanie (Michael) Fox, Adam (Adrienne) Zweimiller, and Lauren (Jason) Flake; great-granddaughters, Kiera, Jordan, and Zoe. 

Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Spring Valley Baptist Church, 91 Polo Rd, Columbia, with Dr. Robert Winburn officiating. The family will receive friends from 12-2pm at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church.
