Charles Edward Powell

ELGIN- Funeral services for Sgt. 1st Class Charles Edward Powell U.S. Army (Ret.), 83 will be held Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Blaney Baptist Church with burial to follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The Rev. Jacob Helsley and the Rev. Philp Blankenship will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blaney Baptist Church at P.O. Box 305, Elgin, S.C. 29045.

Mr. Powell passed away on Thursday, July 02, 2015. Born February 4, 1932 in Knox County, TN, he was a son of the late George W. and Ruth Sands Powell. Mr. Powell retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years and served in the Korean War and two tours in Vietnam. He was a member of Blaney Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and farming.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Wanda Faye Powell; sons, David Powell of Elgin, Col. Mark Powell (Kim) of Peachtree City, GA, and Mike Powell of Lugoff; a daughter, Diane Saville of Elgin; grandchildren, Robert Powell, Christopher Powell, Jonathan Powell, Emily Powell, Lydia Powell and Matthew Powell, Kate Saville and Nicholas Saville, and Mahalia Bainter; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary Cox, Lorene Smith, Helen Wilkerson, Mildred Powell; and brothers, George W. Jr. and Eugene Powell.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to NHC Parklane and Palmetto Health Hospice for the care and kindness given to Mr. Powell and his family.
