Chapin’s Plexico sets winning pace, twice – ON THE SPOT | RUNNING Running

THE LEXINGTON RACE Against Hunger 10K on Feb. 28 had 258 finishers with Chapin’s Ryan Plexico, 31, winning in 36:03. Virginian Colan Spangler, 22, was second in 39:14. Lexington’s Toby Selix, 39, placed third in 39:40. Columbia’s Jeff Brandenburg, 48, was fifth in 39:56 and First Masters finisher. Columbia’s Norm Ferris, 65, was 13th overall and first Grand Master in 42:38.

From Lexington, Devon Shirley, 32, was first female and 18th overall in 44:01. Also from Lexington, Kristin Cattieu, 34, was second female, 19th overall. Lugoff’s Lindsey Smith, 18, was third female, 26th in 46. Columbia’s Jesse Smarr, 77, was most Senior finisher in 1:17:09. Brigitte Smith, 65, Aiken, was this year’s most senior female finisher.

The March for Meals 5K, held Feb. 21 and managed by Columbia’s Senior Resources Center, had 165 finishers. Plexico won this race in 17:37. Columbia’s Will Brumbach, 37, placed second in 19:22. Columbia’s Mike Schrum, 25, finished in third in 19:37. Brandenburg had the same finish time as Schrum but was clocked in fourth place. Lexington’s Gina Campbell, 33, was 13th overall and first female in 23:02. Fifteenth overall, Barbara Brandenburg, 48, was first Masters Female in 23:25. Lexington’s Mikayla Morales, 15, was third female in 24:21, 17th overall.

Chapin’s Dan Frick, 77, was the most Senior finisher and first in the 75-plus age group. The women’s most Senior finisher was a tie between Columbia’s Jane Mergle, 69 and Chapin’s Lauren Frick, also 69. Their respective finish times were 41:48 and 52:53.

The Race for the Place 5K on Feb. 21 drew 133 runners. West Columbia’s Orinthal Striggles, 39, on the cusp of becoming a Masters runner, won in 16:10. West Columbia’s Justin Bishop, 33, was second in 16:20. Justin Jones, 29, from Blaney, was third in 17:25. Irmo’s Kenneth Vowles, 16, was close behind in 17:26.

Seventh place went to Cayce’s Caroline Peyton, 29, in 18:09, first female overall. Shawanna Hite, 35, of West Columbia finished 13th in 19:09. Columbia’s Mary Claire Cox, 38, was 14th in 19:11.
