COLUMBIA – Cleo Ross Goodwin Jones, 94, of Columbia, widow of George Wesley Jones, died July 27, 2014. Born in Blaney, SC (now Elgin) on April 2, 1920, she was the oldest daughter of Gussie Hayes Ross and Arthur Lee Ross. Cleo attended local schools, graduating in 1937 as Valedictorian of her class. She went to the University of South Carolina before transferring to Columbia College, where she received a degree in Home Economics in 1942.
During World War II, she worked as a dietitian at Roper Hospital, Moncrief Army Hospital, and at Columbia College.
In 1959, she worked at the South Carolina State Hospital as a social worker. She attended Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, and graduated in 1961 with a master’s degree in Social Work. She became Coordinator of Volunteer Services at the S.C. Department of Mental Health, serving there until her retirement 30 years later.
Cleo was first married to William Coleman Goodwin, Jr. Later, she married George Wesley Jones, Jr., in 1982. She served a term as Trustee Chair at Windsor United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her grandson, Edward Alwyn Goodwin and his wife, Lane; her daughter-in-law, Toni Goodwin Hubbell and her husband, Jeffrey; her sister, Lois Monroe; nieces, Barbara McCaskill (Bill), Deloria Burriss (Jack), Kaye Simpson, and nephew, Wayne Goff (Mary), as well as great-nephews, Gregory Goff, Curt McCaskill, Brad McCaskill, Trevin Burriss and Michael Burriss. Cleo was preceded in death by her son, William Coleman Goodwin III; her grandson, William Coleman Goodwin IV, and her sisters, Norma Goff and Lynne Brazzell.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, August 7th, at Windsor United Methodist Church, with The Rev. Stephen Gaither officiating. A reception will follow at the church. There will be a private burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Windsor United Methodist Church, 9500 Windsor Lake Blvd., Columbia, SC 29223; or to Riverbanks Botanical Garden and Zoo, 500 Wildlife Pkwy., Columbia, SC 29210.
