Funeral service to celebrate the life of James McCrea “Jim” Thornton, Jr., 90, of Camden, SC, will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 27, 2014 at First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery with military rites. Rev. Ray Deese will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00PM in the Church Fellowship Center. Memorials may be made in Mr. Thornton’s memory to First Baptist Church, Bus Ministry, 1201 Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Thornton died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, He was born in Blaney, SC, the son of the late

James McCrea Thornton, Sr. and Lottie Watson Thornton. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the VFW, the American Legion, the Marine Corps League and the Camden Lions Club. Mr. Thornton was a WWII, US Marine Corps veteran and was a recipient of the Silver Star. Mr. Thornton had retired from Du-Pont.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Deese Thornton, son by marriage, Chuck Belcher, grandsons, Jason Stresing (Wendi) and Sam Stresing; son-in-law Dr. Al Stresing (Sharon); five nieces and one nephew; and his devoted companion, his cat, Lightening. He was predeceased by his first wife, Juanita Stokes Thornton, daughter Elaine Thornton Stressing and a son, James M. Thornton, III.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
