Robert “Butch” Nates

Robert “Butch” Nates was born March 13, 1947 in Columbia, to Parris Young Nates and Leila LeGrand Nates.

Robert “Butch” Nates, 66, of Elgin, died Sunday, September 15, 2013.

Butch worked in residential construction as a carpenter and pipefitter. He currently attended Spears Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Leila LeGrand Nates of Elgin; sisters, Peggy Ford Herlong of Gaston and Minnie (Dean) Williams of Elgin; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Butch was preceded in death by his father, Paris Y. Nates; and brothers, Thomas, Woodrow O. and Paris Y. “Pat” Nates II.

The funeral service for Mr. Nates will be held 11 o’clock, Thursday, September 19th, at Spears Creek Baptist Church, 220 Spears Creek Church Rd, Elgin, with The Rev. Greg Sweet officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o’clock, Wednesday evening, at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Dr, Columbia.
