1918

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Marie Hornsby on October 25, 1918, in Blaney, a daughter of James M Hornsby and Elizabeth Mattox, however her mother passed away when she was four days old and Michael Ernest “Mike” Hornsby and Dove Motley Watts Hornsby raised her as their own.

1920 Census Information:

According to the United States Census recorded on January 9, 1920, Mike Hormsley (35) owned a farm in Wateree Township, Kershaw County, South Carolina. Also in the home was his wife, Lovie Hormsley (34) and their children; Alma Hormsley (15), Edward Hormsley (9), Boykin Hormsley (8), Liza Hormsley (6), Viola Hormsley (4), Otto Hormsley (3), Lillian Hormsley (1) and Jimmie Hormsley (1) and his mother-in-law, Lilas Motley (72). All of the family member reported having been born in South Carolina; Mike was a farmer on his farm, Lovie Hormsley and Alma Hormsley were laborers on that farm.

1930 Census Information:

Michael Ernest “Mike” Hornsby is listed as the head of household; also in the home was his wife, Dove “Dovie” Motley Watts Hornsby; and children, Boykin L Hornsby, Eliza T Hornsby, Viola A Hornsby, Otto E Hornsby, Lillian E Hornsby, Lizzie M Hornsby, and Ellerbe Hornsby. Mike E farmed and Dovie kept house, they reported that both of them could not read or write. Boykin was helping to keep the family farm. Another son, Otto had to pull double duty to help with the farm and go to school, while siblings Eliza, Viola, Lillian, Lizzie, and Ellerbe attended school.

1934

On October 9, 1934, Miss Lizzie Marie Hornsby was listed as a living sister in the obituary of Oscar Hornsby.

1956

On June 18, 1956, Mrs. Edmond Johnson was listed as a living daughter in the obituary of James M Hornsby.

1957

On February 4, 1957, Mrs. Edward Johnson was listed as a living daughter in the obituary of Mike Hornsby.

1964

On January 1, 1964, Mrs. Edmond Johnson was listed as a living sister in the obituary of Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Branham.

1969

On March 19, 1969, Mrs. Edward Johnson was mentioned as a living daughter in the obituary of Mrs. Dovie Motley Hornsby.

1971

On September 17, 1971, Mrs. Lizzie Johnston was listed as a living sister in the obituary of Boykin L. Hornsby, Sr.

1985

On February 16, 1985, Mrs. Earl Stockman was listed as a living sister in the obituary of Mrs. Eliza Hornsby Branham.

On October 3, 1985, Lizzie J. Stockman was listed as the living spouse in the obituary of Samuel E Stockman.

1989

On May 1, 1989, Mrs. Lizzie Stockman was listed as a living sister in the obituary of Edmond W Hornsby.

1996

On August 6, 1996, Lizzie Stockman was listed as a living sister in the obituary of Otto Ernest Hornsby.

2001

On July 27, 2001, Lizzie Stockman was listed as a living sister in the obituary of Ellerbe L. Hornsby.

2011

ELGIN, SC – Elgin: Elizabeth (Lizzie) M. Hornsby Johnson Stockman, 93, of Elgin, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2011. Born on October 25, 1918 in Blaney, SC, she was a daughter of the late James Hornsby and Elizabeth Mattox Hornsby, who died when Lizzie was only four days old.

Lizzie was raised by Mike Hornsby and Dovey Mattox Hornsby on Highway Church Road in Blaney. She met and married Edmond Johnson and moved to Aiken.

Lizzie was always very active at Redds Branch Baptist Church where she worked with youth and children. Edmond died in 1973, after which she married Earl Stockman in 1977.

Mrs. Stockman became an active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Elgin.

Survivors include her daughters, Marie (Bennie) Rawls of Aiken, SC, Fran (Mike) Birch of Fairfax, SC; son, Sonny (Kathy) Johnson of Tookiedo, SC; grandchildren, Sherry Beecher, Angie (Bob) Tice, Eddie (Courtney) Johnson, Chad (Melissa) Johnson, Paula (Jay) Billingsly, Joseph Birch; great grandchildren, Caleb, Josh, Jacob, Bryce, Makayla, Joey, John, Banks, and Alex; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters.

A funeral service for Mrs. Stockman will be held 3 o’clock, Friday, November 25, 2011, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 2666 Hwy 1 South, Elgin, SC 29045 with The Rev. Kenneth Jackson officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Dr., Columbia, SC from 6 until 8 o’clock.

A graveside service will be held at 12 o’clock, Saturday, November 26, 2011, at Redds Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, 390 Redds Branch Rd., Aiken, SC 29801.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery, one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church Bus Fund, or a charity of one’s choice.
