Rev. Lawton Wells, Jr., was born on March 10, 1926 in Sumter, South Carolina, the son of Winburn Lawton Wells and Annette “Nettie” Elizabeth Taylor Wells.

1930

According to the United States Census reported on April 9, 1930, Winburn L Wells (43) rented a home in Sumter, Sumter, South Carolina with his wife, Nettie E Wells (40). It was reported that they were married when he was 23 and she was 20. Also in the home was their children; Mary E Wells (16), F Evelyn Wells (14), Nettie G Wells (11), Edith V Wells (9), Anna L Wells (7) and W Lawton Wells (4) and his mother-in-law, Eudora E Taylor (71). All family members were reported to have been born in South Carolina. Winburn L Wells was a mechanic on automobile.

1950

On July 8, 1950 in Florence, Florence, South Carolina, Winburn Lawton Wells (24) and Jean Graham (24) were married.

1965

On January 29, 1965, Rev. Lawton Wells was listed as a living son in the obituary of Mrs. Nettie Elizabeth Taylor Wells.

2009

A funeral service for Rev. Lawton Wells, Jr., 83, of Elgin will be held Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Lakeview Baptist Church with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. Rev. Hugh McKinney, Rev. Phillip Blankenship and Rev. Burt Williams will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, November 2, 2009 at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made in Rev. Wells’ memory to Lakeview Baptist Church, 1520 Mill Street, Camden, SC 29020, Blaney Baptist Church, 1400 Blaney Road, Elgin, SC 29045 or Kershaw Health Hospice, 2001 West DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Rev. Wells died Saturday, October 31, 2009. Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Winburn Lawton Wells and Nettie Taylor Wells. He was a retired Baptist minister having last served Lakeview Baptist Church in Camden for 24 years. Rev. Wells had graduated from Furman University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a member of Blaney Baptist Church. Rev. Wells had previously served East View Baptist Church in East View, Kentucky; Corinth Baptist Church in Vance, South Carolina; Eutawville Baptist Church in Eutawville, South Carolina; Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Camden, South Carolina; Cornerstone Baptist Church in Camden, South Carolina and Abney Baptist Church in Camden, South Carolina; Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church and upon his retirement was named Pastor Emeritus of Lakeview Baptist Church. Rev. Wells had also served in several capacities for the Board of Trustees of the Bethea Baptist Home in Darlington, SC.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Graham Wells; sons, William Lawton Wells and his wife, Mari Wells of Columbia, John Wells and his wife, Sherry Wells of Elgin, Rev. Taylor Wells and his wife, Lynn Wells of Aiken, Dan Wells and his wife, Leslie Wells of North Augusta; grandchildren, Harrison Wells, Samuel Wells, Sarah Wells, Jack Wells and Kate Wells; sisters, Edith Watson (Tom Watson) of Orlando, Florida, Louise Wilbur of Bent Tree, Georgia and Edna Boyd of Albuquerque, New Mexico; brothers-in-law, William J. Graham, Jr. and Carroll Shelley.

He was predeceased by sisters, Evelyn Hughey, Mary Montgomery and Nettie Shelley.

The family would like to thank Rev. Wells’ caregivers, Mrs. Dianne Conner, Ms. Isabelle Gaskins, Mrs. Lula Greene, Ms. Bea Williams and the staff of Kershaw Health Hospice for their special care.
