Doris Branham Rose Thomas was born July 11, 1928 in Blaney, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Walter English Rose and Emily Branham Rose.

Mrs. Doris Rose Thomas, 81, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Monday, July 20, 2009.

She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Coley English Rose and Jimmy Hazel Rose, and by her husband, Gilmer Waymon Thomas, Sr. who passed away on September 18, 1996.

She and her late husband, known affectionately as “Big Tommy”, opened and began operating the Thomas Barbershop in September, 1959, in the Buckhead area of Atlanta at the corner of West Paces Ferry Road and Northside Parkway/U.S. 41. The Thomas Barbershop has become an Atlanta institution which has served 4 generations of customers in the same location and will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in September, 2009. Doris Thomas was a much loved presence at the Thomas Barbershop for most of its history, treating everyone who patronized the shop, whether of low or high station in life, as family and sharing with them her gentle kindness and dry humor.

She was survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Doris Ann Thomas Rye and Jerry Rye of Douglasville; her son and daughter-in-law, Gilmer Waymon Thomas, Jr. and Sheila Little Thomas of Cumming; and her son and daughter-in-law, Walter Clexton Thomas and Linda Goodman Thomas of Fayetteville. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren, Tracey D. Rye of Douglasville, Carla Thomas Camp and Burt Camp of Fayetteville, Jason Walter Thomas and Charlotte Thomas of Fayetteville, and Gilmer Waymon Thomas, III and Stephanie Thomas and Jamie Cofer Thomas, all of Charleston, SC; her 8 great-grandchildren; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn Rose Branham and Charlie Branham, Vera Rose Nelson and Wayne Nelson, and Betty Rose Timmerberg and James “Jim” Timmerberg, all of Elgin, SC; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Arlin and Jim Rose and Jerry Rose and Barbara Rose, all of Elgin, SC; her sisters, Iris Rose and Jean Rose Jeffers and her brother, Robert Rose, all of Elgin, SC; and her sister Emmadora Rose Mikesch of Fenton, MO.

Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 1:00 PM from the Douglas Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Douglasville with Rev. Charles Sims officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehaven Cemetery in Douglasville. The following will serve as pallbearers: Mac Abercrombie, David Mulkey, Trey Thomas, Ricky Johnson, Frank Wilson, and Randy Bryant. Her grandchildren and their spouses will serve as honorary escort. The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, Douglas Chapel, Tuesday, July 21, 2009 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mrs. Doris Rose Thomas to the Shepherd’s Spinal Center, 2020 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30309-1465.
