Paul LeRoy Grooms Sr. was born September 5, 1928 in Chesterfield, South Carolina, the son of William M. Grooms and Lila Brown Grooms.

1930 Census Information:

According to the United States Census recorded on April 8, 1930 in William Grooms (32) rented a home in Patrick, Chesterfield, South Carolina with his wife, Lela M Grooms (26). It was reported that they were married when he was 21 and she was 15. Also in the home was their sons; Olin W Grooms (8), Grady Grooms (6) and Paul Grooms (2). All family members were reported to have been born in South Carolina. William Grooms was a laborer at a saw mill.

1940 Census Information:

According to the United States Census recorded on May 14, 1940, William M Grooms (43) rented a home in DeKalb Township in Kershaw County, South Carolina with his wife Leila M Grooms (36), his children; William O Grooms (16), Grady Grooms (15), Paul Grooms (12), Nora L Grooms (9), Leila M Grooms (7), and Annie Grooms (2) and his niece, Leolis Brown (17). All family members were reported to have been born in South Carolina, and lived in another rural area of Kershaw on April 1, 1935. William M Grooms was a farmer.

On January 4, 2007, Paul Grooms was listed in the newspaper article “ELGIN TOWN ELECTIONS – TRAFFIC, GROWTH TOP ISSUES.”

2008

On November 6, 2008, Paul L. Grooms was listed in the newspaper article “Paul Grooms, former Elgin mayor, dies.”

ELGIN — Funeral service for Paul L. Grooms, 80, will be held Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Ken Jackson, Rev. John Corder and Rev. Bill Drees will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Town of Elgin Library Building Fund, PO Box 277, Elgin, SC 29045.

Mr. Grooms died Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late William M. Grooms and Lila Brown Grooms. A veteran of the United States Army, he served in the Korean conflict where he received a Purple Heart. He retired from the Civil Service at Fort Jackson and served on the City Council for the Town of Elgin. He served as Mayor for the Town of Elgin from 1994 to 2007.

Mr. Grooms was a volunteer fireman and former fire chief with the Blaney Fire Department and was a former Little League baseball coach. He was a USC Gamecock and New York Yankee’s fan, and enjoyed NASCAR. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Willie Viola Grooms; son, William Bruce Grooms; daughter, Alice Close; brother, Don Grooms; sisters, Louise Hite and Ann Cobb; grandchildren, Stephanie Gillian, Aimee Boone, Carrie Grooms, Samantha Grooms, Zachary Close, Cody Grooms, Stacia Grooms, Kadee Hodge and Austin Close; great-grandchildren, Ellie Gillian, Jacob Watson, Maylee Boone, Sydney Gillian, Bowden Boone, and Jada and Amaya Rhodes.

He was predeceased by a son, Paul L. Grooms, Jr.; and grandson, Dustin Grooms; brothers, Oren Grooms, Grady Grooms and Glenn Brown; and sisters, Nora Outlaw, Leila Vaughn and Leolis Harris.
