Mrs. Brittie Mae Sowell was born July 11, 1918 in South Carolina, daughter of Early Phillips and Leanna Prudie Sowell Phillips.

1920 Census Information:

According to the United States census reported on March 2, 1920, Early Phillips (23), rented a home in Buffalo, Kershaw, South Carolina, with his wife, Prudis Phillips (25), and their children; Easter Mary Phillips (4) and Bridy Mae Phillips (2). All family members were reported to have been born in South Carolina. Early Phillips was a farmer on a general farm.

1930 Census Information:

According to the United States census reported on April 10, 1930, Earlie Phillips (34), rented a home in Buffalo, Kershaw, South Carolina, with his wife, Prudy Phillips (33), and their children; Easter Phillips (14), Brittie M Phillips (11), C J Phillips (8) and Jethro Phillips (6). All family members were reported to have been born in South Carolina, except Earlie Phillips who reported being born in North Carolina. Earlie Phillips was a farmer on a general farm.

1940 Census Information:

According to the United States census reported on April 8, 1940, Early Phillips (45), rented a home in Buffalo, Kershaw, South Carolina, with his wife, Prudie Phillips (44), and their children; Easter Phillips (23), Brightie Mae Phillips (20), C J Phillips (18) and Jethro Phillips (16). All family members were reported to have been born in South Carolina and lived in the same house on April 1, 1935. Early Phillips was a farmer and Easter Phillips, C J Phillips and Jethro Phillips were laborers on the farm.

1942

On July 12, 1942, Thomas Sowell (22) and Brittie Mae Phillips (22) were married in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

2008

JEFFERSON – Mrs. Brittie Mae Sowell, 90, died Oct. 3, 2008.

Funeral services were held Oct. 7, at 3 p.m. at Crossroad Baptist Church, Lancaster. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Brittie Mae Sowell, daughter of the late Earlie Phillips and Prudie Sowell Phillips, was born July 11, 1918. Brittie Mae was a member of Crossroad Baptist Church where she served on the missionary ministry and the senior choir. She was married to the late Thomas Franklin Sowell. She was a member of the Golden Gate Order of the Eastern Star #234 OES.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas Sowell, Jr. and Earl Sowell.

Surviving are four daughters, Virginia Adams (Jessie), Gloria Meadows (Gerald), Teresa Louallen (Doug) all of Jefferson, and Oretha Hunter (Karl) of Richmond Hill, Ga.; four sons, Dexter Sowell (Mary), Rexter Sowell (Doretha), Willis Sowell (Geraldine) all of Jefferson and Danny Sowell (Anjenette) of Cheraw; a sister, Easter McCain of Kershaw; an aunt, Flossie Clyburn of Bronx, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Flemming Funeral Home-Pageland was in charge of arrangements.
