COLUMBIA — Services for Thomas Q. McCaskill, 84, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Rosewood Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park .
Mr. McCaskill died Sunday, July 13, 2008. Born in Blaney, he was a son of the late Thomas Murdock McCaskill and Pearl Kelly McCaskill. As a child, he enjoyed history and later served in the United States Army and the CC Camp. In the mid-forties, he began working at Lower Main Grocery and later at The Edisto Market on Rosewood Drive. In the mid-sixties, he became part owner with Hall Thomasson of the “new” Piggly Wiggly on Rosewood Drive and retired in 1996. While at “The Pig,” he ran the meat market and received several service awards and recognitions during years of service.
Mr. McCaskill was a USC Gamecock fan and enjoyed watching and listening to their football games. He was a longtime member of Rosewood Baptist Church where he served several terms as deacon, was a church trustee, taught Sunday School for many years and helped minister in the Homebound Ministry. As a Christian, he tried to live his life by the teachings found in the Bible and was a wonderful father, devoted husband, and a kind and gracious man. He lived in spite of, and battled with, Parkinson’s for over eight years and now the victory is won.
Surviving are his wife, Violet A. Clegg McCaskill; daughter and son-in-law, Angela McCaskill Roberts and Rev. Gene Roberts of Savannah, Ga.; son, Darryl W. McCaskill and partner, Brian Frazier of Atlanta, Ga.; stepson, George W. Cowart, III and his wife, Martha of Columbia; beloved grandsons and granddaughter- in-law, Tim Roberts and Ben Roberts of Savannah and Josh and Christa Roberts of Jacksboro, Tenn.; sisters, Marguerite Bruce McCaskill , Memory Rose McCaskill, both of Columbia and Eleanor Jean McCaskill DeLoach of Varnville and brother, J.R. “Dick” McCaskill of Whitmire, their spouses and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife of forty-four years, Marguerite Hammett McCaskill, two brothers and a sister.
Service will be held 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Rosewood Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
