LUGOFF – Graveside services for Sgt. Jesse John Gates Sr., U.S. Army (Ret.), 82, will be held Sunday, September 17, 2006, at 2 p.m. in Old Fox Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Wayne Flowers will officiate. Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff – Elgin Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Gates died Friday, September 14 2006. Born in Blaney, he was the son of the late Pinkney Gates and Addie Lucas Gates. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran having served in the Pacific Theatre, Korea and Vietnam. He was a recipient of 15 Battle Ribbons, five Battle Stars, two Arrow Heads, three Theatre Ribbons from Pacific Theatre, one from Korea, one from Philippines and Amertioros Unit Citation and Good Conduct Metal with six loops. When asked by his grandson, Jay, about his military service, Mr. Gates replied, “Son, of all terrors and triumphs of my life, there’s not one single thing that I would go back and change. I feel that I have respectively paid my dues to my country.” Mr. Gates retired from Kershaw County Medical Center with 33 years of service as an EMT.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Thelma J. Gates; sons; Johnnie (Barbara) Gates of Camden, Thomas (Cynthia) Gates and Jesse Gates (Linda) Jr.; daughters, Vonnie Miles, Connie Wheeler (Thomas Wheeler), Myra (Paul) Cameron; grandchildren, Jenny (Jesse) Payne, Jesse J. Gates III, Nicole Gates and Kim (Chris) Holman, all of Lugoff; four great-grandchildren, Brantley, Nicholas and Cameron Payne, Cason Holman. He was predeceased by four brothers, a sister and a granddaughter, Crystal R. Smith.
