COLUMBIA – Funeral service for the Reverend Dean S. Clyde Sr. will be held will be held 3 o’clock Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Park Street Baptist Church. Dr. Sam Catoe and Dr. Lewis McCormick will be officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be The E.C. Gayle Sunday School Class. Interment will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Park Street Baptist Church, 2204 Park Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
Mr. Clyde died June 2, 2006. He was born July 6, 1921, in Greenville, SC, to the late Reverend William Edgar and Lila Childress Clyde. He graduated from Floyds High School in Nichols, SC. He attended Mars Hill Junior College in Mars Hill, NC, and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Furman University in Greenville, SC. Mr. Clyde earned a Masters of Theology degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was licensed to the ministry in 1939 by Spring Branch Baptist Church, Fair Bluff, NC. Mr. Clyde was ordained in 1945 by Heath Springs Baptist Church, Heath Springs, SC. He served the following churches during his ministry: Swift Creek, Darlington, SC 1945-1949; Peniel, Timmonsville, SC 1950-1956; Ariel, Coward, SC 1950-1956; Blaney, Elgin, SC 1956-1970; Park Street, Columbia, SC 1970-1980; River Bluff Chapel, Holand Avenue Baptist Church, Cayce, SC 1981-1986. He retired in 1986, but served at Park Street in Columbia, SC, as Minister of Visitation starting in 1993.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Martha Nell Clyde; daughter, Martha Taylor and husband, Dave, of Columbia, SC; son, Dean S. Clyde Jr.; grandchildren, Carrie and Sonja Taylor of Columbia; brother, Rev. William P. Clyde and wife, Nelle, of Laurens, SC; sister, Vernell Hooks and husband, John, of Nichols, SC. Those who preceded him in death were a brother, Rev. Robert E. Clyde, and sister, Sarah Kate Hilton.
