Nonprofits awarded $3,000 from fund

Four Kershaw County nonprofit organizations will share $3,000 in grants from the Kershaw County Endowment Fund, administered through the Central Carolina Community Foundation:

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County will receive $1,000 to support its Healing Arts program, which uses the arts to help people with special needs express themselves.

The Upton Trio has been awarded $1,000 for its “Fundamental Forces: The Music of Science,” which brings curriculum-based live chamber music the county’s elementary schools.

The Humane Society of Kershaw County will use $500 to upgrade kennels in the puppy wing at its animal shelter.

The United Way of Kershaw County will build handicap ramps for low-income elderly and disabled people with a $500 grant.

The endowment issues grants twice a year in Kershaw County. To date, it has invested more than $51,000 in the community.

School district to hold screenings for children

The Kershaw County School District will hold a free vision, hearing, speech, language and developmental screening clinic for children ages 3-5 today at Pine Tree Hill Elementary.

Parents can bring their children for these screenings from 9-11 a.m. Interested parents should contact Cynthia Rennick, Child Find Specialist, at (803) 425-8925 for an appointment.

The purpose of these screenings is to help parents and the district identify early any special-needs children and match available services to assist children with those needs.

The district will hold similar screenings each month, November through May, at different locations. Dates and locations already scheduled include Dec. 8 at Midway Elementary; Jan. 12, Lugoff Elementary; and Feb. 9, Blaney Elementary.

Colonial Cup run, walk on Saturday

The Colonial Cup 10K Run and 5K Walk are set for Saturday at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Park.

The run begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 8:35 a.m. Fee is $18 in advance, $20 day of event.
