Madge Craig Funderburk Brown

Mrs. Madge Craig Funderburk Brown, 94, of Wade Funderburk Road, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2003 at the Union Regional Medical Center, Monroe, NC. Born October 7, 1908 in Chesterfield County, SC, she was the youngest child of Franklin Bernard Funderburk and Mary Jane Funderburk. She was a graduate of Greenville Woman’s College (now Furman University) and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY. She spent her entire life in education and Christian service, first as a public school teacher, later as a Baptist Association Home Missionary, and finally returning to teaching in the public schools in Chesterfield County, SC and Union County, NC.

It was during her Association Ministry work that she met James Cleveland Brown of Conway, SC. They married December 29, 1950, and resided in Conway. Following his death in 1965, she returned to her native Chesterfield County and lived for a few years at `The Old Funderburk Homeplace` with her brother, Leon B. Funderburk, until her new home was built nearby, where she lived until mid-2002 when, due to declining health, she moved to Springhill Assisted Living Home in Pageland.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mae F. Burns and Mavis F. Funderburk; nine brothers, Hermas Funderburk, Hurley Funderburk, Leon B. Funderburk, Leston Funderburk, Thearon Funderburk, Cecil Funderburk, Cova Funderburk, Turner Funderburk and Olan Funderburk; and 15 nieces and nephews.

Survivors include five nieces, four nephews, and a host of great-nieces and nephews, including Stewart Funderburk, who has made his home with his great aunt for many years, both sharing and caring for each other in many ways.

The funeral will be held Sunday, January 19, 2003 at 2 PM at Liberty Hill Baptist Church near Pageland, where she was a faithful member. Her pastor, Rev. Mack Mullis, and former pastor, Rev. Jack Hudson, of Lancaster, SC, will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be at Sutton Funeral Home, Pageland, SC on Saturday, January 18, from 6 to 7:30 PM. At other times the family will be at her home on Wade Funderburk Road.
