1940 Census Information:
Head of household, Paul Gilreath Chastain (27) and his wife Mildred Gunter Chastain (24) and lodger, Madge Craig Funderburk (31) rented a house for a reported $7.00 per month. It was reported the family members were all born in South Carolina. Paul Gilreath Chastain was a teacher for the public school and Mildred Gunter Chastain kept house, Madge Craig Funderburk was a teacher for a public school.

On September 19, 1941, Mrs. Chastain was listed in the newspaper article “Lieutenant Chastain Of Blaney at Camp Lee.“

On March 9, 1996, Mildred Gunter Chastain was listed as the living wife in the obituary of Paul Gilreath Chastain.
2002
Graveside funeral services for Mildred Gunter Chastain, of Charleston, and formerly of Columbia, were Sept. 4, 2002, at Wagener Cemetery in Wagener, SC. Mrs. Chastain died Sept. 1 at a local hospital. She was 87.
Mrs. Chastain was born on Aug. 31, 1915, in Wagener, a daughter of Lloyd Gunter and Maggie Garvin Gunter. She was a homemaker and member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca Jackson and her son-in-law, Jimmy Jackson, both of Summerville; and two grandchildren, James G. Jackson and Steven N. Jackson, both of Summerville.
Mrs. Chastain was predeceased by her husband, Paul Gilreath Chastain.
