Elgin needs two residents to file for council race

From Staff Reports

Two member of Elgin Town Council are expected no to run in a Feb. 7 municipal election, and no one else has signed up for the seats with only  a few days left to file.

Councilman Bryce H. Smith has said he won’t run for re-election, and Councilman Jim Wheaton said he probably won’t run. Both said they need more time to spend with their families and meet other commitments.

Town Clerk Nettie Campbell said the election has been scheduled to fill the council seats held by Smith and Wheaton, whose terms are expiring. Council members serve four-year terms.

The filing deadline is 5 P.m. Tuesday. Prospective candidates must be town residents and pay a $10 filing fee. As of Wednesday, no one had filed for the seats.

The terms of Mayor Loretta Carr and Councilmen Paul Grooms and Bruce Sloan will expire in 1991.
