3 die on S. C. roads during weekend

Three people died as a result of weekend accidents on South Carolina roads, including a Kershaw County girl who was struck by a passing automobile within a mile of her home.

La Toya Tucker Belton, 8, of Smyrna Road in Elgin, a student at Blaney-Elgin Elementary School, died of multiple injuries at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Richland Memorial Hospital, Kershaw County Coroner George Kornegay said.

About 7 p.m. Friday, Miss Belton was running around the rear corner of a car parked on Smyrna Road and was about to enter the vehicle when her momentum carried her in front of a passing car, Kornegay said. The death was ruled accidental and unavoidable, he said.

At 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Debra L. Reaves, 31, of Belvedere died when the vehicle she was driving struck a tree off S. C. 121, one mile north of Secondary Road 28 in Edgefield County, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Barry Scott McCoy, 25, of Salem died at 10 p.m. Friday when his motorcycle hit a concrete drainage culvert along a Walhalla road.
