S. C. weekend accidents leave 11 dead on roads

A Swansea man who died when he was struck by a car while walking along a Lexington County road was among 11 people who lost their lives in a weekend accidents in South Carolina.

The state Highway Patrol said the victim, Identified by family members as Calvin Edmond Steverson, 26, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday when he was hit along S.C. 6.

He was one of two pedestrians who died Saturday. Ralph Leroy Grace, 28, of Loris, was hit by a car and died at 10 p.m. on a secondary road in Horry County.

A motorcyclist, Larry Hunter, 31, of Kershaw County, died when his bike left a secondary road just north of Kershaw in Lancaster County.

Kenneth Marshall, 16, of Greenville, died at 4 p.m. Saturday when he fell from the bed of a pickup on White Oak Drive in Greemville County.

Another motorcyclist, Frank Curtis Harris, 31, of Inmam, died Saturday when a car collided with his bike on U. S. 76 north of Spartanburg.

The Highway Patrol said a Cerro Gordor, N. C., woman, Ruth McBride Sexton, 52, was a passenger in a car that collided with another vehicle Saturday at an intersection on U. S. 501 in Horry County.

State troopers said Eddie Mullinax, 20, of Boiling Springs, N. C., died when his car went off a secondary road, hit a tree and caught fire north of Gaffney Saturday.

Sonya Kay Geddings, 21, of Columbia, died Saturday in a two-car collision on U. S. 76 east of Sumter.

Stanley J. Polaski Jr., 44, of Lexington, died Saturday when the pickup truck he was driving left S. C. 6 and hit a pole in Lexington County.

Authorities said Hubert Charley, 74, of North, was standing about 30 feet from his car, which apparently stalled on a railroad track, when a Seaboard Systems freight train smashed into it Friday at 7:40 p.m., killing him.

Jerry Lee, 26, of Effingham, died late Friday when his car left a secondary road and overturned south of Florece.
