Newberry tops drag qualifiers

ELGIN

Bob Newberry of Schenectady, N. Y., qualified his dodge Omni in 6.79 seconds to take the leading position in the Alcohol Funny car division of the NHRA drag racing event at Blaney Dragstrip.

Cleveland’s Udo Horn qualified second in 6.91.

Darrell Gwynn, of Miami, topped the alchol dragsters with a 6.64 clocking. He was just ahead of Bruce Horner of Cleveland at 6.75.

Jeff Velde piloted his Camaro Down the strip in 7.98, the only Pro-Stocker to break the eight-second barrier.

Gary Brown’s 8.21 paced the Competition Eliminator division.
