A $110,000 civil suit filed by Lynn Fernandez against Elgin Town Council member Loretta V. Carr and a convenience store has been settled out of court.

In the suit, filed in early February, Ms. Fernandez alledged Mrs. Carr caused her to lose her job as a clerk at a Pantry Food Store on Main Street in Elgin.

The suit alleged Mrs. Carr went to the store and asked that Ms. Fernandez be fired because while she was working in the store, she solicited the signature on a petition to the town to hire a second policeman.

Ms. Fernandez, a resident of the Blaney West subdivision near Elgin, alleged she was fired although her actions were not in violation of company rules. She also claimed in the suit that the firing deprived her of her right of free speech.

Her attorney, H. W. Carroll Furman, said Thursday that Ms. Fernandez agreed to settle the suit for an undisclosed sum paid by the store.
