Outdoor Nativity drama are now under way in the greater Columbia area – showing the events of the first Christmas Eve in Bethlehem.
The live scenes featuring the Holy Family and the manger are preennial favorites for family viewing in the days before Christmas.
Live animals are featured in some of the programs, with live or taped music also apart of some presentation. In some of the dramas, strictly visual scenes or tableaux are presented, while spoken lines are involved in others.
Now in its ninth year is the “Judean Hills” drama wich begins tonight at Columbia’s North Trenholm Road Baptist Church and will be show through Christmas Day.
Continuous 12-minute presentations are made from 6:30 to 10 each evening in a “drive-in” process where viewers never have to leave their cars.
Five hundred members of the North Trenholm congregation are involved in the annual production which includes live animals and taped music.
The Christmas Nativity Pageant at Eastminster Presbyterian Church began Tuesday night and will be presented again at 7 p.m. today and Thursday.
The manger stall has been erected in the church courtyard facing Trenholm Road. Directed by Mary Ann Beverly, it includes a cast of 43, with speaking parts, an angel choir, live animals, trumpets and a flute.
IN WEST COLUMBIA
A Live Nativity Drama will be presented on the grounds of Northside Baptist Church at 1303 Sunset Blvd. in West Columbia this weekend.
A continuous program 15 minutes long will be repeated from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.
OUTDOORS IN ELGIN
Blaney Baptist Church in Elgin is staging a live Nativity Scene from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Four 10-minute presentations will be made by the church youth, directed by Jerry Starling.
Music taped by choir members will be heard at the outdoor Nativity Scene at Faith Lutheran Church at 1717 Platt Springs Road in West Columbia on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Three presentations will be made each night – at 7:30, 8 and 8:30.
The Rev. Creston Tawes, pastor of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, will be the speaker at the Midweek Advent Service at 12:30 p.m. today at Shandon United Methodist Church.
Bob Derrick will be the liturgist at the concluding service of this Advent Season. Lunch will be available afterward in the Leisure Ministries Center.
A Christmas pageant will be presented by the young people at Greenlawn Baptist Church today in the sanctuary, after a 6:30 p.m. supper in the fellowship hall.
The children’s choirs will sing, and the Rev. Dr. Robert C. Mulkey, Greenlawn pastor, will present a monologue entitled, “Christmas at Green Point.”
