Area Prep Slate Has Seven Games

Two factors – the upcoming City Prep Tournament and the Christmas Holidays – have taken their toll on the usually stout Tuesday night basketball schedule.

Just seven are club are involved in action tonight and only two games – Olympia at Irmo and St. Angela at Chapin – will be played locally.

Blythewood journeys to Blaney, Hopkins to Carver of Spartanburg, Webber to Mt. Pleasant, undefeated Booker T. Washington to Sterling and Hanberry to McCrory-Liston of Winnsboro.

Olympia, is unbeaten string snapped by Saluda last week, takes a 3-1 mark to the Yellow Jackets’ gym in another 5-AA conference battle. Mike Martin and Mike McLaughlin, the Red Devils’ aces are expected to duel with Irmo’s Tim Stepp and Steve Sharpe.

Chapin, a winner in its only outing to date take on 3-A rival St. Angela with Marty Woolbright and Leland Teal at its point-makers. The 6-5 Woolbright poured in 38 in the Eagles’ opening win over Newberry last week.

Blythewood, 2-2, meets class A opponent Blaney. Charlie Byrd has been the top gun so far in the Indian’s arsenal.

Hopkins, fresh from a resounding win over Jackson, will rely on its balanced attack to wear out Carver. Webber’s Eagles travel to Charleston’s Mt. Pleasant for its shoot-out.

James Bright, Larry Green and James Lawhorn lead Hanberry versus powerful McCrory-Liston in a game at Winnsboro wile unbeaten Booker T. Washington travels to Greenwood for a AAAA mitch with Sterling. Leon Benbow and Robert Anderson lead the Tornadoes’ high-scoring offence.

Most clubs cease action until after the holiday vacation. But eight clubs – Flora, Airport, Brookland-Cayce, Columbia, Dreher, Eau Claire, Lexington and Lower Richland – all get together Thursday through Saturday for the Annual City Prep Tournament.
