Blaney May Change Name on Tuesday

BLANEY – Tomorrow is the day when resident here will decide whether to keep the town’s present name or to rename it Elgin in honor of the Elgin Watch Co., which has a plant under construction here.

The movement to rename Blaney began more than a month ago when it was first learned that Elgin would establish a plant here.

At that time, the unincorporated community of Elgin in Lancaster County registered strong protests against Blaney’s adopting the same name. Dissension also split Balney and the name-changing movement subsided.

It was revived in recent weeks, however, and a petition signed by the majority of the freeholders in the town of Blaney was submitted requesting a referendum to assess the voters’ sentiments.

The polls will open at 8 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m.
