Mattie Hinson Dowey


Mattie Hinson Dowey was born December 22, 1873 in Lugoff, the daughter of Hardy Hinson and Fanny Barnham Hinson.


Mrs. C. P. Dowey, 88, of 3659 Humphrey Drive, Columbia, died this morning, August 2, 1961 in the Providence Hospital after an illness of three weeks.

The former Mattie Hinson, she was born December 22, 1873 in Lugoff, the daughter of the late Hardy Hinson and Fanny Barnham Hinson. She had lived in Columbia for the past five years.

She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Blaney, and was the widow of the late C. P. Dowey.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. G. A. Ray, Columbia; three sons, Willie J. Dowey, J. D. Dowey and Jack Dowey, all of Columbia; a sister, Mrs. Sally D. Rabon, Williamsburg, Va.; also 33 grandchildren and 58 great grandchildren.

Paschal Funeral Home is in charge.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock Friday morning from Pine Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J. N. Williams and the Rev. Jimmy Rogers. Interment will be in the churchyard.

Active pallbearers will be Melvin Dowey, Bobby Stockman, Lion Stockman, Lonnie Dowey, Norman Ray and Alfred Ray.

Honorary pallbearers will be D. D. Smith, “Doc” T. D. Palmer, Frank Abbott, Gred Bookamn Gary Branham, L. W. Smith, Clint Stockman, Lawrence Peak, Charlie Kelly and the deacons of Pine Grove Baptist Church and deacons of Harmony Baptist Church.

The body will remain at Paschal Funeral Home until 5 o’clock this afternoon, August 3, 1961, when it will be taken to the home of Jack Dowey, 3659 Humphrey Drive, Columbia.
