A man was arrested yesterday in connection with the theft of a safe from the Batesburg home of Calvin Warren, operator of the Carolina Exterminating company.
Lexington County Sheriff H. Cromer Oswald said a warrant charging burglary had been issued against Charlie Goodson, 42, of Batesburg and Hartsville.
The sheriff said that Goodson, was arrested yesterday at Lexington.
Goodson had not made any statement yesterday, Sheriff Oswald said.
Other men were being sought in the case, the sheriff said.
He said that none of the $2,800 contained in the stolen safe was recovered from Goodson.
The 400-pound safe was dragged out of the front door of Mr. Warren’s residence during the hour and a half the occupants were away from home early last Friday night. It was then hauled away on a truck which officers think was the same one stolen earlier from the Batesburg-Leesville football game and recovered the following day ten miles from Batesburg. Entrance to Mr. Warren’s house was made through a window.
The safe was recovered Friday in a wooded patch file miles below Blaney. It had been opened and its contents removed.
State law enforcement division officers were assisting with the investigation of the case.
