More than 146 top-rate animals were exhibited at the first annual Columbia fat stock show and sale which opened yesterday at Fairwold, attended by 400 persons from various counties in the state.
There were two main division of the show, the junior division and the adult division. The junior division also had a special show for 4-H entries and FFA entries.
Heyward Kirkland of Blaney, FFA, was declared grand champion in the junior division, in which 4-H and FFA members competed fro a total of $500 in prizes, which were given according to animal grades. Miss Lois Dowey of Dentsville, FFA, was the reserved champion.
These two winners also were declared champs in FFA group. Winners in the 4-H group were the animals on exhibit by William Rauston of Johnson, 4-H, whose animals were listed champion and reserve champion.
In the adult division, F. M. Roddey of Columbia received first prize in the carlot and the pen of three groupings.
Other prizes in the car lot group were: McIver Pickett, Columbia, second prize; Connor brothers, Eutawville, third, and David Dows, Blythewood, fourth.
Prizes in the pen of three included; J. R. Hawkins, Columbia, second; F. M. Roddey, Columbia, third; Mr. Hawkins, fourth and J. C. Heriot, Bishophville, fifth.
The amount of the purse in the adult division was as follows; carlot; first, $100; second, $75; third, $50; fourth, $25 and fifth, $10.
Pen of three: first, $25; second, $20, third, $15; fourth, $10, and fifth, $5.
The sale will start at 1:30 this afternoon when the animals judged yesterday will be on sale. It is expected that buyers will pay as much as $1 per pound for some of the animals.
