Two hundred and thirty-three winners in the South Carolina High School league commercial contest program were announced by the personnel bureau of the University of South Carolina.
These winners in the four commercial contests, Bookkeeping, shorthand, arithmetic and typewriting, will represent their respective districts and the school in the final contest on the university campus during the High School Week, April 24, 25 and 26. The number of winning contestants in bookkeeping was 71; in shorthand, 54; in arithmetic, 50, and in typewriting, 58.
Steadily increasing interest and participation in the High School league commercial contest program in recent years made necessary the provision for preliminary contest to select limited number of contestants for participation in the finals. Preliminary examination were administered in the respective schools. F. DeVore Smith of Columbia, chairman of the committee on commercial contest, assisted the personnel bureau in scoring papers and determining winners.
Rules permit participating schools to test as many pupils in the receptive subjects as they wish. The three strongest contestants are determined for each school in each subject to represent the school in completion with other schools in each district. The top five or more contestants in each district are listed as winners to compete in the final contests.
Announcement lists, by districts are alphabetical. Standing of league contestant in preliminaries are not revealed before final contests are over.
