Olympia High School Opens With Victory Before a Capacity Gallery

Playing before a capacity gallery the largest crowd ever to witness a high school game in Pacific gymnasium – the Olympia Red Devils defeated Winnsboro last night in their season opener, 28 to 13.

From the first goal until the final whistle Coach Harry Shealy’s boys were out in front, although the Mt. Zion visitors kept the battle hot until the game ended.

At the end of the first half the Olympians were leading by a small margin, 10 to 8, but they pulled away to a substantial lead before the finish.

Buddy Gordon and Jolly Worrell of the victors tied for individual scoring honors with seven points each.

Collins led the visitors with five points.

Olympia displayed brilliant teamwork with Eldon Grant, newcomer Bill Knox and W. S. Gordon outstanding on defense.

Mixon and Wages on offense and Collins and Hoover on defense were stars for Winnsboro.

Olympia’s famed cheering section was in action again and added much to the success of the occasion.

In a preliminary contest, Blaney defeated the Olympia B. team, coached by Dick Weaver, 16 to 9.

Blaney led at the intermission, 10 to 4.
